My paintings are done primarily on location in the traditional style of plein air painters. I enjoy traveling with my sketchbook and palette capturing the character and beauty of the landscape. Beyond the local coastal and vanishing landscape of California, I have traveled and painted on six continents. My paintings have become a personal diary of my travels. I try to escape crowds and our cement city as often as possible.
I believe in the basic principles of representational art as a base for the spontaneity of plein air painting. I learn about light and color by working outdoors from direct observation and later translate my successes into larger studio paintings. I have a wanderlust spirit that fits perfectly with an outdoor painter.
I feel inspired to capture the essence of the day through the illusion of brushstrokes and paint. If a painting captures the mood of the day on canvas I have been successful. I am attracted to shadow patterns and strong light or that certain combination of colors that dictate the drama and theme of a painting. I am compelled to share the inspiration and mood of the world. Painting is an endless pursuit that touches my soul.
Additionally, I work with commercial clients developing concepts and designs for their projects. My artwork is placed in Acapulco Restaurants, California Pizza Kitchen and Marie Callendar's locations throughout the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and the Phillipines. Art, in any capacity is a wonderful and enriching experience for me, shared by my family and supported by my friends and collectors.
I enjoy outdoor activity such as bird watching, hikiing, water sports such as surfing, swimming and river rafting and also gardening, cooking, and reading.
While I am proud to be a not-so-starving artist, I haven't given up my day job in radiation physics. I constantly strive to balance two seemingly opposing careers but find my interest in natural sciences complements my understanding of the world I paint on canvas. I am proud to be represented in Ridenour Gallery in Corona Del Mar, and Laguna Beach, Portico Gallery in Montecito and The Store at historic Crystal Cove in Newport Coast. My commercial website can be reached at www.SanderlingProductions.com . For more information I can also be reached at 562-433-6446. I gladly accept commissions.
